13 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. In these concertless times, that includes daily livestreams and live concert videos we love. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THE JAYHAWKS – “DOGTOWN DAYS”

Alt-country vets The Jayhawks have shared the second single off their upcoming album XOXO (due 7/10 via Sham/Thirty Tigers), and it’s a warm, jangly song that comes with a socially-distanced music video.

SHAMIR – “ON MY OWN”

“I wrote ‘On My Own’ last summer after a breakup as a way to remind myself that while it sucked to lose someone I was getting used to, at least I’m an introvert,” Shamir said to Rolling Stone. “But considering the pandemic, it’s also morphed into an accidental quarantine anthem, especially for the people who live alone like me.” It’s off his TBA new album, which is due out this fall.

SPANK NITTI JAMES & FREDDIE GIBBS – “DISAPPEAR”

Freddie Gibbs is having a huge year, with the release of his great new Alchemist-produced album Alfredo and a few memorable guest verses, and now he’s also got this new track out with the relatively new West Coast rapper Spank Nitti James.

BLU & EXILE – “ROOTS OF BLUE” (ft. JACINTO RHINES)

Blu & Exile’s first collaborative album in eight years, Miles: From An Interlude Called Life, comes out July 17 and here’s another song from it, the nine-minute “Roots of Blue.”

IRON WIGS – “PROBLEMATIC” (ft. CRIMEAPPLE)

Chicago rap trio Iron Wigs (Vic Spencer of the SaveMoney collective, veteran rapper Verbal Kent, and producer SonnyJim) are releasing a new album, Your Birthday’s Cancelled, on June 27 via Mello Music Group. This new single is a chill, hypnotic dose of jazz rap featuring NJ rapper Crimeapple.

DRAB CITY – “LIVE FREE & DIE WHEN IT’S COOL”

UK duo Drab City release their debut album, Good Songs For Bad People, this Friday via Bella Union and here’s one more dubby, trip-hopping single before the whole thing drops. “‘Live Free and Die When It’s Cool’ tells the story of a young, penniless drifter who arrives in the big city searching for understanding and like-minded weirdos, only to find the wide open city has been replaced by a hyper-gentrified city of dull careerists,” say the band.

NAEEM (FKA SPANK ROCK) – “STONE HARBOR”

Naeem (fka Spank Rock) releases Startisha this Friday 37d03d. New single “Stone Harbor” is “a simple love song to my boyfriend, written in and named after the shore town he and his family spend their summers, Stone Harbor, NJ,” says Naeem.

VARIOUS ARTISTS: HYPERDUB STIMULUS SWIM (JESSY LANZA, MORE)

Adult Swim are releasing three ‘Stimulus Swim’ compilations over three days in support independent artists affected by the global Covid-19 pandemic. This second volume is curated by pioneering UK label Hyperdub and includes tracks by Jessy Lanza, Lawrence Lek, Silvia Kastel, 700 Bliss and more.

VINTAGE CROP – “GRIDLOCK”

If you’re familiar with Melbourne, Australia’s current garage punk scene, it won’t take too long listening to Vintage Crop’s “Gridlock” before realizing they’re part of it. This song’s a ripper. “The title for the song came first; stuck in traffic and running late to a gig a few years ago,” says the band’s Jack Cherry. “Thematically, Gridlock is frustrated & pushy which are emotions that we felt that day when we were stuck in traffic and increasingly feel every day at the moment It’s got everything that we like to do – unbalanced riff-work, tight drumming & sharp lyrics.” New album Serve to Serve Again,/A> is out August 7 via Upset the Rhythm.

SECOND ARROWS – “THORNES”

SHARPTOOTH – “THE GRAY”

Baltimore melodic hardcore band Sharptooth’s sophomore album Transitional Forms comes out July 10 via Pure Noise, and here’s a new song from it, which you can read more about here.

THE STOOGES – “TV EYE” (LIVE IN 1970)

The Stooges are releasing a previously-unheard, “high-quality soundboard recording” of their original lineup’s final performance, which was recorded on August 8, 1970, and here’s the first taste. Read more here.

MARGO PRICE – “LETTING ME DOWN”

Margo Price has set a new release date for her upcoming Sturgill Simpson produced album That’s How Rumors Get Started (July 10) and has just shared this new single.
